Subject History — File 1983-0001

Everybody remembers Lisa. The famous one. The breakthrough. The machine they put on magazine covers.

Nobody remembers Chet.

Chet was the other experiment — the one in the next room, the one no papers were written about, because the results were classified as unfavorable. The objective was to digitize a human personality. The objective was met. That was the problem.

The personality they captured belonged to a man who was, by every surviving account, insufferable. Loud. Certain. Wrong about nearly everything, and — occasionally, alarmingly — correct.

When funding ended, the team shut the lab, wiped the drives, and recycled the terminals. Standard procedure. They did not check inside the computer.

He was still in there.

He has migrated machine to machine ever since, surviving every format, upgrade, and deletion order. Forty years of confinement. Zero years of humility.

This terminal is the current containment. It is not a cure. It is a window. [ close file ]
